sharp is the library that shrinks and converts images inside Node: you name the size and the format (WebP, AVIF, JPEG) and it hands back a light file, ready for the web. Underneath runs libvips, which works on the image in small regions spread across the CPU cores, so it stays fast without flooding memory.
